Electroless nickel plating<\/a> offer key benefits over traditional electrolytic plating<\/a> due to the fact that the electroless deposits are formed without the need of externally applied electrical current. Electroless Nickel Plating vs Electrolytic Nickel Plating<\/p><\/div>\n

The electroless nickel plating process (EN) has several distinct advantages over the traditional electrolytic nickel plating process. The primary difference with the nickel plating process is that EN does not require the application of an external electrical current to drive the deposition as does electrolytic nickel. Rather, EN uses a chemical reducing agent within the solution chemistry which results in nearly uniform deposition on all surfaces that are wetted by the EN chemistry. Since the electrolytic nickel plating process requires the application of an externally applied DC current, the deposit tends to be non-uniform with excess deposit on the edges or corners (high current areas) of the part.<\/p>\n

A Guide to Electroless Nickel Plating<\/a><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>This guide is concerned with autocatalytic nickel plating, commonly referred to as electroless nickel plating. In contrast with electroplating, electroless nickel (EN) does not require rectifiers, electrical current or anodes. Deposition occurs in an aqueous solution containing metal ions, a reducing agent, complexing and buffering agents and stabilizers. Chemical reactions on the surface of the part being plated cause deposition of a nickel alloy. Since all surfaces wetted by the electroless nickel solution have the same plating rate, the deposit thickness is quite uniform. This unique property of EN makes it possible to coat internal surfaces of pipes, valves and other parts.<\/p>\n
